Three Common ADHD Myths

People with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, are unable to control their impulses and often are hyperactive. The illness is often misunderstood, and a popular perception is that the person is immature and lacks discipline. Because of certain misconceptions, people with ADHD Las Vegas might not get the help they need.

add las vegas

ADHD is a childhood Phase
Those who believe ADHD is a childhood phase are actually expressing two myths. The first is the suggestion that only children are plagued with the condition. And, the second myth is depression las vegas that these children will eventually “grow” out of it.

The truth is, about 60 percent of children diagnosed with ADHD become adults with ADHD, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. This percentage translates to 8 million adults in the U.S. who are plagued with the condition.

Further, the idea that a child can grow out of the condition suggests that the child is simply experiencing behavior issues, and they will eventually mature. The truth, however, is that ADHD is a medical disorder. As such, children can grow into adults who learn to manage the disorder. To do so, they must work with a licensed medical professional.

Eliminating Sugar Gets Rid of the Condition
A common misconception is that children and adults with ADHD have too much sugar or food additives in their diets, or toxins in their environment. As a result, children or adults adhd las vegas become unable to pay attention or focus.

Indeed, well balanced meals are necessary for keeping individuals healthy and are helpful in managing some ADHD symptoms. However, simply changing a person’s diet can’t “cure” him or her of ADHD. This is because ADHD is related to brain development -- it is a mental disorder. While poor nutrition can affect a child’s learning abilities, it doesn’t cause ADHD.

Also, it must be noted that toxins in the environment can impede a child’s brain development. Eliminating access to the toxin is a start but isn’t a cure for ADHD.

Girls Don’t Get ADHD
Girls are afflicted with ADHD, but boys are three times as likely to get the illness when compared to girls. Also, girls often display different ADHD symptoms than boys, according to the American Psychological Association.

While ADHD boys tend to be hyperactive, girls with ADHD tend to be daydreamers. And, they often have trouble remaining focused. Recognizing that there’s an issue, girls tend to overcompensate. For this reason, ADHD symptoms in girls might be overlooked.

Girls with ADHD usually aren’t disruptive and do as they’re told. But, they often are highly self-critical, and as a result, may develop eating disorders and may hurt themselves. They’re at a higher risk for suicidal attempts than boys with ADHD.

Adults can be diagnosed as well, though it’s not as adhd las vegas common. Currently, ADHD Las Vegas affects around 4.1% of American adults and affects 9.0% of American children aged 13 to 18.

The History of ADHD:
Kids who were unable to control their actions were once thought of as having behavior issues or a lack of disciple or respect for elders before the discovery of ADHD. Although the disorder was first mentioned in 1902 by British pediatrician Sir George Still, the American Psychiatric Association did not recognize ADHD as a mental disorder until the late 1960s.

In 1980, the APA depression las vegas changed the name of the disorder from hyperkinetic impulse disorder to attention deficit disorder. Since ADHD was accepted as a real disorder, professionals such as teachers and doctors now are able to recognize applicable behavior issues for what they are, symptoms of ADHD.

Types of ADHD Diagnosed in Las Vegas And Around the US:

Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulse:
• Fewer than six symptoms that a patient presents are related to lack of attention.
• Most symptoms fall into the hyperactivity-impulsivity categories.

Predominantly Inattentive:
• Children who suffer from this type of ADHD are less likely to be disruptive in class or disagreeable with other children. They can and do sit quietly but still have difficulty paying attention. Due to its subtle nature, this subcategory is much harder to recognize.

Children With ADHD Have More Than a Behavioral Problem

adhd las vegas
Nearly 10% of children and adolescents are diagnosed with ADHD at some point in their lives. While some people think that kids with adhd Las Vegas are simply undisciplined the fact is that having ADHD is not something a child or parent experiences to get attention or an act of rebellion. It is a real disorder that makes life more difficult for the children, teens, and adults that have it. It also adds to the challenges that their teachers and fellow classmates experience as well.

Not All ADHD is the Same

add las vegas
People commonly think of a child with ADHD as one who acts out spontaneously, can't stay in their seat, and is prone to causing trouble for themselves and others. While these are all examples of behaviors of some children with ADHD, it is only a small portion of the picture for those who live with ADHD in Las Vegas.

The Two Types of ADHD

depression Las Vegas

There are two main components of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD. The first in referred to as the inattentive part. This is the one that daydreams, that forgets homework, or who always seems to lose their pencil. The Hyperactivity/ Impulsivity part is the part that can't sit still. They leave their seat at the wrong time. Blurt out answers. They say the wrong thing, and can provoke fights or do things that might be dangerous. Some children have problems in both these areas. Some are  primarily inattentive, which is sometimes referred to as ADD, since they are not hyperactive. Others have more hyperactive and impulsive symptoms.

Traditional Discipline is Not the Answer

add las vegas
Unlike a child who acts out for some specific reason, and needs to be corrected in order to quickly learn from their mistake, a child with ADHD is not setting out to be "naughty." They are following their brain's natural instincts because their brain works differently than most other kids. Without direction and knowledge of their condition, living with ADHD can be especially difficult. Kids start to think they are "bad" or "lazy" or "stupid" or "ditzy."  Parents often wonder what they did wrong and blame themselves. This poor self esteem is destructive for both. What the child really needs is to have their ADHD properly diagnosed and be given a structured program to follow that will help them manage their symptoms more often, and find ways to make their ADHD work for them rather than against them.

Sometimes the Support System Needs Some Support

adhd las vegas

Growing up with ADHD is not easy. Before diagnoses children often feel weird, left out, angry, dumb, and they wonder why they cannot just be like everyone else. After a diagnoses these same feelings often emerge but they are comforted by a support system of parents, and peers who ideally understand that they are going through something. This support system, along with therapy and whatever route to wellness the doctor recommends, will help the child feel better about himself and working through the hard spells will be a bit easier knowing that there are people all around him/her that care. These family members play a vital role in helping a child with ADHD thrive, however it can wear a person down over time.

adhd las vegas

Quality centers to help treat ADHD Las Vegas will help children with behavioral problems begin their path to a lifetime of wellness. It is Important That Parents Take Time for Themselves It is easy to fall into a little bubble when a family member has been diagnosed with a behavioral problem. Most parents will do anything they can to help their child feel loved, supported, and strong enough to overcome whatever they are fighting. This "fight" can be all consuming. In between making sure a child has the things they need to thrive, parents need to make sure to still take a little time alone to recharge. And siblings may need extra attention every once and a while.

adhd las vegas

There is No Room for Guilt in Healthy Thinking It is important that a caregiver to a child with a behavioral problem does not fall into the cycle of pulling themselves down with unnecessary guilt. They need to be reminded that they did not cause their child to have ADHD, and they often need to be reassured that they are enough. No one expects to have to cross certain roadblocks, and internalizing guilt or asking why is common. Encouraging parents to let go of guilt, and focus on loving the child they have in front of them will help improve their mindset. Parents and siblings of children and teens with ADHD, depression, and who fall within the autism spectrum occasionally need their own support system as well.

adhd las vegas

Siblings can be overlooked, and parents overstressed. It is important that at least a moment of time is taken to address the rest of the family on the road to wellness.

The Growing Rate of Autism Diagnosis

autism las vegasIt seems as if the topic of autism las vegas comes up more often these days than it did in the past. This is no wonder because the rate of children diagnosed with this developmental disorder has increased dramatically in the last couple of decades. In the 1980s, about one out of 2,000 children got this diagnosis. Today, the rate is closer to one child out of 150. Meanwhile, scientists and doctors have no definite conclusions about the reasons why.
The Diagnosis for Autism is Expanding
It is surely alarming when parents learn that their child has been diagnosed with autism. One clear reason that more children get this label than did in the past is because the definition for this condition has expanded in the last couple of years.
For example, Asperger's syndrome and pervasive development disorder, also called PDD, used to have their own formal names but be informally considered mild forms of autism. The diagnosis of autism now includes these disorders, and they don't formally retain their own names in diagnostic manuals.
Were Children Properly Diagnoses in the Past?
autism las vegasIn fact, some children who have the milder forms of this condition may have never been diagnosed a decade or more ago. At least, they might not have been diagnosed with autism but something else. Growing awareness of symptoms, even among medical professionals, may lead to an autism diagnosis today but would not have in the past.
Ten or twenty years ago, some of these kids might have been diagnosed with with ADHD Las Vegas or other cities with big medical centers. Many were also classified as having a low IQ, but that might not have been the case at all. Instead, problems with communication might have been interfered with these children's ability to score well on standard IQ tests. Regardless, if the wrong diagnosis was a low IQ or ADD in Las Vegas, the child might have gotten the wrong treatment and been terribly misunderstood.
autism las vegas
Other children might have just been considered a bit odd because the condition interfered with their social abilities. This is not to minimize the severity of this condition for some individuals, but there are plenty of examples of famous people who seem to have autistic tendencies but never had a formal diagnosis.
autism las vegas
Does it Matter Why Autism Rates are Rising?

Some doctors say that they aren't sure why rates are higher than they were in the past, but they also add that isn't the most important concern. They believe researchers should try to focus on why the rates are what they are today and not worry about the past. Even though scientists believe that autism is a product of a certain combination of genes and environmental factors, they are not at all sure what those are or how much they matter.

Medicines Augment Treatment for Autism and ADHD

adhd las vegasAs the incidence of autism Las Vegas and elsewhere increases, more and more effort is going into finding treatments for some of the behaviors that can accompany it. These treatments take many forms, but in many cases, a combination of medication and behavioral therapy is used to bring about improvements in problematic areas. The specifics of such treatment depend on the individual case, with variations commonly used depending on the severity of the condition and whether any particularly troublesome behaviors are commonly exhibited by the person in question.
Aggression and violence are some of the most worrisome behaviors shown by certain autistic children, and the main reason for the concern is simply that people and things can be harmed during these flares of temper. Since medications have had good results in cooling the fires of aggressive people, they are often prescribed for the same purpose in those with autism. Clinical trials are currently going on in Las Vegas to test new medicines, but most patients use an already-tested medication instead.
adhd las vegas
adhd las vegasMany autistic people also display an inability to pay attention to their lessons for long periods. In these cases, the first thing to be sure of is whether or not they're truly inattentive. Autistic people often do not naturally appear to pay attention, when in reality, they are mentally recording everything with the clarity of a movie studio camera. Therefore, testing must be done to make sure that they truly do have an attention problem rather than simply not seeing any need to bother looking at someone who is talking to them.
Once attention deficit is confirmed, there will be several options for treating ADHD Las Vegas at the same time as autism. Medication has been shown to bring improvement in many people, so it will likely be suggested as a first line treatment. There are several medications currently available, so if one doesn't work well, a different one will likely produce better results.
adhd las vegas
It is important that those who have multiple psychological issues have them treated as part of a package instead of as separate units. This is because the patient experiences everything at once, so it's important to understand how all of the aspects fit together. From a physical standpoint, the main reason for holistic treatment is to prevent drug interactions and to avoid prescribing medications that help with one thing but worsen another. Getting everything right can be challenging at first, but when done properly, the results can be well worth it.

Bringing Order To ADHD and Autism

In recent years more children, and even adults have been diagnosed with either Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Recent statistics show 1 in 88 children under the age of 8 are being diagnosed somewhere oh the Autistic Spectrum, and nearly 1 in 10 children are receiving an ADHD diagnosis. Both disorders are considered psychosocial diagnosis affecting behavior and many are seeing a link between the two. A study at a Massachusetts hospital looked at the behavior patterns of 240 kids with ADHD and 227 kids that did not have the disorder. Less than 1 % of non-ADHD kids had high scores for autistic traits, but 18% of kids with ADHD has scores that indicated that these traits including withdrawal , social, and thought problems. With both disorders, a genetic connection is suspected and traits such as problems with anxiety and disruptive behavior are often present.

The Different Faces of ADHD and Autism
Even if two children have the same ADHD or Autistic Spectrum Disorder diagnosis, the symptoms are behavior concerns can differ greatly between those two children. Any treatment approach for a child with autism in Las Vegas or a child with ADHD in Las Vegas needs to be individualized.
An ADHD Snapshot
ADHD diagnosis is divided into three types; , the hyperactive-impulsive type, the inattentive type and the combined type. The hyperactive- impulsive type is what most people picture in their mind when they think of ADHD. Symptoms of hyperactivity in these children include being fidgety, highly talkative, prefer to be moving , and have trouble engaging in quiet activities or tasks. Their impulsivity makes it hard to take turns. They may blurt things out at the wrong time and interrupt activities and conversations of others.

Those with the inattentive type are easily distracted, have trouble focusing and miss details. It often seems that they are bored or not listening, unless they especially enjoy what they are doing. They are prone to lose things, don't like to follow directions, and often process information slower than other kids. Daydreaming is also common.

Looking at the Autistic Spectrum Disorder
Autistic children usually start displaying symptoms early in life. Making eye contact is difficult, babies may become obsessed with a limited number of objects, and they are less likely to be interested in interactive play or having "babbling" conversations with parents or caregivers. Symptoms can also start at age 2-3, and their social and language development may regress. They might speak in an unusual tone or rhythm and it can sometimes be difficult to discern their feelings by looking at their facial expressions.

Learning the Best Approach

Most people act to the world around them and approach learning largely on instinct. For those with ADHD or autism las vegas, blindly following these instincts can be unproductive, disruptive, and even destructive. By working with professionals that have a strong understanding of these conditions, children and adults can often learn to bring order to their lives and make the most of it.

Treating Autism and ADHD

autism las vegasThough debate rages around the treatment of autism las vegas and elsewhere, one thing is often agreed on: Issues that interfere with a person's enjoyment of life are candidates for intervention. Since autism can cause such interference in many cases, a variety of options exist for mitigating these negative effects. As with other issues that involve psychiatric treatment, many of these options focus on the use of medications, counseling, or both.
One thing that needs to be kept in mind when approaching treatment is that autism is a "spectrum" disorder. In other words, an individual can experience effects ranging from mild quirks to severe dysfunction. Therefore, all treatments need to be custom-tailored to the individual. In some cases, an individual may not even desire treatment, per se, but would benefit from some coaching to help with certain social issues that accompany this diagnosis.
Usually, it's best not to force treatment in cases that aren't severe. To those with the mild forms of the condition, various characteristics are seen as parts of the personality, and nobody wants to lose himself. Even so, many people will want treatment if they see that it will help them and if it is presented in a positive way.
adhd las vegas
For those who suffer severe symptoms, or have co-existing problems such as adhd las vegas, treatment will be more beneficial. ADHD in Las Vegas is often treated with medications that help improve focus and make it easier to break off from fixated behaviors. Often, treating this aspect will allow for greatly-improved learning since the person will be freed from the interference that has been preventing it. Once conditions like this are taken care of, it'll be much easier for behavioral therapists to provide the benefits they are hired for.

Some may wonder if children will grow out of autism, ADHD, and similar issues. While these things seem to improve with time in many cases, the fact is that those who have the conditions usually just learn how to deal with them as they get older.
autism las vegas
This can give the appearance of having "grown out of" a behavior, but things can still be harder for the person as an adult than they should be, and this can have significant economic and social impacts. For this reason, adults often seek treatment for ADHD and coaching for autistic traits in order to make their lives easier and to pick up tips that they were unable to understand as children.

Diagnosing and Treating ADHD and Autism Early Leads to Understanding

autism las vegas
There are many intelligent children that have a hard time succeeding in school, not just academically, but in their relationships as well. Often these children head home not only with homework, but with labels such as lazy, spaz, or freak by their peers. Authority figures, like teachers, principals, and even counselors are bit more tactful, adding "underachiever." or "disruptive" to the list. But none of these labels makes these children feel any better. Often they hear more of the same at home, and they start to believe those labels are true.

A child being subjected to this type of labeling may have Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or they may fall somewhere on the autistic spectrum.

ADHD in Las Vegas

In cases where ADHD is the issue causing behavioral problems or poor school performance actually identifying and accepting the disorder is the first step in learning to live with it, and finding a way to work within its confines in order to succeed. According to The Centers for Disease Control, up to 9.5% of children and adolescents are eventually diagnosed with ADHD.

  autism las vegas
Kids with ADHD don't always seem hyper, although they are often the first to be diagnosed. There is an inattentive type of ADHD too, where the "hyperactivity" in mainly internal causing the person who has it to forget things, lose things, have trouble organizing, and not completing instructions. They may be in their own world, and often this does not affect the rest of their class, but it does impair their own ability to absorb and retain knowledge. The might be quiet, not because they don't have anything to say, but because there is so much activity going on inside their mind they don't know where to start.
When outward hyperactivity is present for a child, teen, or adult with ADHD Las Vegas, they might talk constantly, fidget, and move around when they are supposed to stay still. They have a hard time playing quietly, and have tendency to blurt things out and interrupt others.

Autism in Las Vegas

In professional circles, Autism Las Vegas is referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder, because there are a range of behaviors and symptoms that a child might experience in varying levels of severity. At the high functioning end of the spectrum a child may seem quirky and may be obsessed with a handful of their favorite things. Social interaction might be something that doesn't seem to matter much at all, especially if the other person doesn't share their interests. A person with a more severe case of autism may be unable to speak, may engage in behaviors such as swaying, chanting, and may be more likely to experience outbursts. Physical contact may be very upsetting and even seem painful.

Autism in Las Vegas, and across the country is highly prevalent, CDC statistics indicate that more than 14% of children land somewhere along the autistic spectrum. Boys are diagnosed five times more often than girls.

  autism las vegas
On average, autism is diagnosed at age 4, but reliable diagnosis can occur as early as 2 years of age. Children have trouble with social skills, can't make friends, and may have difficulty empathizing with the feelings of others. They also have trouble reading nonverbal cues as to how another person feels. They often take the world around them very literally, and they may speak in an unusual way or not at all. Within the Autism Spectrum Disorder, the most common diagnosis are Autism, Aspergers Syndrome, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS).

Regardless of where a child falls on the Autism Spectrum Disorder, the best chance of limiting their difficulties in life is to be diagnosed as early as possible and begin intensive therapy. Science Daily reported on one study involving over a thousand children and adolescents with ASD, more than 95% showed improvement in social and language skills when they received treatment, with younger children showing the most improvement.
